The U.S. Federal government now endorses small wind turbines, with a 30% tax credit to taxpayers, as of January 1, 2009.

Our PlanetTurbine.com Wind Systems work in cooperation with your electric utility, to supply power to your commercial business, home, or tax-exempt entity. When the wind isn’t blowing, the utility supplies your electricity. But when the wind speed approaches 5-10 MPH, your PlanetTurbine System begins to provides clean, quiet electricity. When your turbine produces more electricity than you are using, your electric utility buys back electricity from you, effectually dropping your utility payments, and producing a brand new income stream for you, or your organization, that will continue for many, many years!

  • Terminology:

When installing your wind turbine, there are some terms that you may encounter.

  • Favorable Terrain- Favorable terrain can speed up wind, so it is ideal to locate your turbine at the top of a hill facing the prevailing wind, or along a wind ridge of a mountain, or a mountain pass.

  • Average Wind Velocity- Power in the wind is the cubic function of the wind speed. The higher the average wind speed, the more power a wind turbine will generate. It is good to choose the area where the average wind speed is 10 MPH or better.
  • Local prevailing wind direction- Prevailing wind direction is the direction that the wind comes from most of the time. It is more profitable to install your turbine to take advantage of the steady prevailing wind direction, without obtacles or wind blocks nearby.
  • Height of tower- Towers should be installed as tall as possible, because the higher your turbine gets from the earth’s surface, the less ground friction that will be produced to slow the speed of the wind, and the steadier the wind is.  Even in windy areas, we recommended minimum towers of at least 20-25 feet.  The recommended tower heights for PlanetTurbine products is 25-70 feet.
  • Obstacles- Tall trees and buildings will obstruct the airflow, and cause a turbulence area in front and behind the obstacle. Avoid locatingyour turbine within 50 feet of such obstacles if possible.  The height of your turbine should be higher than the top of the nearest obstacle when permitted.  It is ideal to install your turbine on the prevailing wind side of any buildings or trees.
  • Local regulation-  Local regulations are more favorable now to the use of renewable energy wind turbines than ever before.  Both state and local governments are excited to have these renewable recources installed in their geographic area.
